Cultivated urbanism

The focus of this project is a factory that produces timber building components and biomass CHP, but it is one part in a much larger masterplan working with time and circular economy to develop a new metabolic development framework and a cultivated urban landscape.
The role of nature in development of civilisation has varied greatly over time however as urban centres grown culture and modern living have increasingly been painted as its binary. Learning from biological processes and the development of environmental design has so far not been capable of provided adequate solutions to create and ensure a sustainable future.
Can the union of technology and biology be reimagined in a way that creates real change, reducing (even healing) humanity’s impact on the environment whilst providing a course of least resistance for cultural and technological development.
This speculative future posits a social and political climate where factors of energy and environment are tightly interwoven and form the foundation that mediates individuals and industry. The locality of the project hijacks the current (though long-standing) discussion concerning the development of the Thames Gateway.
